Types of Audience: Niche & Mainstream

Types Of Audiences

Niche: Is a small media text that is aimed at a target audience, however is greatly influential. The product can be highly specific of the market audience where they focus on a specific target audience, considering their age, gender and ethnicity. An example of niche products would be Asiana Magazine particularly aimed for British Asians.

The Great British Bake Off
This Television programme is a cooking show played on BBC1 which is rated 8.6/10. This may be because the audience watching it love cooking and trying new recipes. The programme is niche because it is specified toward a target audience who love cooking shows and have an interest with what the competitors are cooking and may also find the competition intriguing and exciting.

BBC Asian Network
Asian Network is a Radio station located in Britain which is aimed for British Asians to listen to and is aimed for a mixed gender. This Radio station is Niche because it is specifically targeted towards British Asians and serve people of South Asia. It is currently a huge success and they get over 600,000 listeners and enjoy the format of Music, News and Entertainment. I also listen to the station sometimes and I love the parts where they present stories of people around London anonymously and they're sometimes heartbreaking stories or mainly humorous stories that have happened on the day.

Mainstream: Is a media text that influences a large number of people. Mainstream products have a mass audience and consume popular texts such as sitcoms and soaps. A Mainstream audience includes children, men, women and adults and has an appropriate genre and BBFC age rating. An example of a mainstream product would be the TV show Baby Daddy which is a Romantic Comedy and is appropriate for all the family to watch.

Friends
The TV show Friends is an extremely successful Comedy show which probably most people love and also because it's aimed at young adults which is a large field. TV series are generally mainstream as each episode gets many views and as far as Friends is considered, they had been airing episodes since 1994 - 2004 which displays a huge success.

BBC Radio
This radio station is very mainstream in Britain as the target audience is very wide range for all ages, genders and ethnicity. It is suitable and appropriate primarily for 15-29 year olds to listen to, however it is hard to judge which ages would listen to the type of music they play which in this case is current and popular music, played after 7PM, which could range out of the targeted audience as they could also prefer that genre of music. This comes across as a mainstream radio station as they also have other stations such as Radio 1,2,4 and 5.

Continuity Editing Exercise StoryBoards

My Storyboard

I created a storyboard just before the filming so that me and my partner Zahra could plan out our ideas clearly so we could quickly look at them while directing and editing the shots.  We planned what shots we wanted to use and illustrated the shots in the boxes below. This made it quick and easy to process the information of each shot. It also made it easy to put down the music and the sound affects we wanted, it just overall gave us an idea of what we were both aiming for.

Me and Zahra had split the storyboard into two, Zahra had made the first six pages and I had made the last five. We tried to include as much detail as we both could.
The storyboard had included shot type and so we included a range of different shot types, to make sure we did not have loads of the same shots in a row which can become boring for the audience.

The first shot includes an Establishing Shot were we see the location and the first time we see the main character Selin entering. An Establishing Shot is important to add in as it shows the audience that the office is set in a school environment.

The next set of shots reveal a Closeup of Selins face as she enters the Headmasters office, where we used a Tilt shot to to make the shots intriguing towards the audience and this allows to get a reaction out of them involving the characters image. In shot 8 and 9, we managed to include a Match on Action shot of the two characters shaking hands as they have just met for the first time.

Dilly's Media Summer

My Media Summer

My summer movie would have to be The Parent Trap as some aspects of the film such as the setting, reminded me of my first week to NCS which stands for the National Citizen Service. For my first week of NCS, we were accommodated to stay in Surrey with our Team Leaders and 72 other strangers which I was expected to befriend between the duration of the challenge which was 5 weeks. Nevertheless, I had to stay in a wooden cabin (as seen below in the movie) in the middle of the woods which had neither lights outside or SERVICE can you believe. Honestly I had no clue how i survived that whole week! I decided to watch this movie as it was relatable to my experience.

In this clip it reminded me of how the cabin looked in Surrey and how we all got along...but clearly in The Parent Trap they didn't.

Also, late at night in the cabins my roommates and I would play Black Jack even though we were supposed to be sleeping, but in the end we would all be in trouble for making a ruckus. Apart from being in trouble, playing cards with the girls was really fun and it lead to us communicating with each other and getting to know them in a lighter aspect. The poker scene in the movie definitely reminded me of me and the girls at night and its something I will never forget.

My favourite summer song was Kent Jones - Don't Mind because of the fact I heard it everywhere I went and all my friends would be singing it at NCS, so the song couldn't escape from my head even if it wanted to. The song is my favourite genre - RnB; which I had actually first heard from word of mouth and instantly fell in love with the song as I couldn't stop singing it. However, the only thing that disturbed me about the song...was later hearing my 10 year old sister singing it. Like SERIOUSLY...

During the holidays I was obsessed with watching Pretty Little Liars which is a Mystery Drama for both a male and female audience. The TV series was produced from the book series which I actually haven't gotten the chance to read. The target audience is aimed at Teenagers and young adults as it contains a lot of blood and violence in some of the episodes and would not be appropriate for a younger audience.

I have a lot of favourite websites but my all time favourite would have to be Twitter. I could never get bored of it as I can retweet all the hilarious vines and tweets and also see what my friends have tweeted also. I love seeing all the treading hashtags which update me on the latest news and hot gossip around the world, which means I can also socially interact and share this with other people. Twitter is like my own personal blog where I can tweet my own feelings publicly and have my friends or people globally commenting on it, and most of the time creates a lot                                                           of humour.
